One of our favorite programs that we use to record YouTube videos, or videos from random places online to use for editing in our clients projects is IShowU HD, which is a Mac only program. Side note: We have the rights to all of the video that we are capturing. The beautiful thing about this product is that it allows you to record any portion of your screen, and output that file in almost any format that you want. The benefit is that you can do an almost real time capture of footage into the format you are going to be editing in or uploading to YouTube, etc.
For a more consumer based use, if you have a DVD of your corporate video you can use this program to play your company DVD and then record the portion of the screen into a format that is YouTube friendly. This takes some trial and error, but once you’ve done it a few times, you are off to the races! There are some great tutorials on how to use this product on their website that you can find here. This is perhaps the easiest way to get your video from one format to another format for a non-technical person.
Another great peice of software that we use is called ScreenFlow and you can find it here. This is a program that has different strengths than IShowU HD. It captures your entire screen by default and you can’t change that, but it allows you to do some pretty cool editing. You can use ScreenFlow to capture using the full 64-bit power of Snow Leopard, put call out boxes on top of your video(like on YouTube), edit together different screen captures within the program, add additional audio tracks to your screen capture, export to virtually any format, add transitions between different screen captures, have the ability to zoom in on your recording, direct YouTube Exports, and perform color correction. All of this within the one program for a grand sum of $100.00.
Both of these programs have there uses, strengths and weaknesses. We have both because we need both programs to fulfill different needs. ScreenFlow allowed us to capture Google Earth playback on a full high-definition screen-1920×1080 and have no problems with stuttering playback. The footage looked beautiful in our edited show.
Hope some of this helps all users from those who want to do basic file conversion to the editor looking for a simple solution to getting high quality capture of a variety of sources. Side note-we are a Mac shop so both of these softwares are Mac only. I’ve heard Camtasia is great for PC, but having no personal experience with it… that is all I can say about it.

I know that it sounds wacky, but YouTube is positioning itself to host videos that are twice the size of IMAX videos. YouTube is bringing 4K(that is the format that the camera RED shoots to and was used to shoot the movie 300) to the party. As a video professional this is something that amazes me and begs the question… why is this relevant? Find out more below.
“…we support original video resolution from 360p all the way up to 4K. To give some perspective on the size of 4K, the ideal screen size for a 4K video is 25 feet; IMAX movies are projected through two 2k resolution projectors.” This according to YouTube engineer, Ramesh Sarukkai.
